BRIEF HISTORY
The Institute of Agricultural Science of South Viet nam was established
on the basic of the " Institute des Recherches Agronomiqes de I'Indochine"
(1925), Institute of Agriculture and Forestry Research for the South
of Indochina (1937), the directorate of Agriculture, Forestry and
Animal Husbandry Research 91956), Institute of Agricultural Research
(1968).
After the reunification of the country (1975), the Institute was renamed
the Institute of Agricultural Technology of the South Vietnam (1977).
In 1981, the Institute was merged with the Sub-Institute of Agricultural
Science and Technology of Vietnam in HoChi Minh City and was called
Instate of Agricultural Technology of South Vietnam.
Since 1990, the Institute has been called " Institute of Agricultural
Science of South Vietnam", (AS).
FUNCTION AND STRUCTURE.
The IAS is a multi-disciplinary research organization responsible
for the following activities:
Research on the breeding and screening of plant varieties and animal
breeds, and on technical aspects of crop and livestock production.
Research on the improvement of existing farming systems and on the
transfer of technology. Scientific services in Agriculture.
10 research departments carry out research activities and the transfer
of technology:
- deartment of Food Crop research.
- Department of Maize research
- Department of Vegetable research
- Department of Legumes research
- Department of Soil Science and Fertilizers research.
- Department of Plant Protection research
- Department of Farming Systems research
- Department of Pig and Poultry research
- Department of Ruminants research
- Department of Foodstuffs and Animal Nutrition research.
And 5 affiliated centers:
- Hung Loc Agricultural Research Center (in Dong Nai province. 50km
from Ho Chi Minh City, devoting mainly to upland crops and fruit
trees.
- Binh Thang Animal Husbandry Research and Development Center (in
Binh Phuoc province), 18 km from HCMC. Focusing mainly on pig and
poultry.
- Ben Cat Ruminant research and Development Center (in Binh Phuoc
province), 67km from HCMC, concentrating on cattle, buffalo, goat
and pasture.
- Dong Thap Muoi Agricultural Research Center, (in Long An province),
170km from HCMC, devoting mainly to lowland rice and rice-based
farming systems.
- Agricultural Training and Technology Transfer Center (at IAS head
office).
